Garden Comparison, what a difference a year makes

There is an old Chinese saying that “when the house is finished, the man dies” – I think the same saying goes for gardeners.

I always take a picture of the front garden beds after I get finished working on them in the springtime, usually the beginning to middle of June.  The following pictures are from June 2011 (top) and 2012 (bottom).  Once the annuals I planted start blooming, I’ll take a picture again.  I think the work hubby and I did will really make a difference (expanded the bed slightly and put lawn edging in, with lots of mulch).

garden 2012

I’m quite pleased with the fact that the garden is mostly perennials, but still gives such a nice show of flowers from the middle of April until the beginning of July. Now to figure out what shrubs to replace the “Rose of Sharon” shrubs alongside the sidewalk with.

  1. Shelly,
I just wanted you to know that I am keeping up with your promise to tear out the front lawn and plant, so I went back and found these pictures so I can see before and after again.
I want you to know though, they are some gorgeous delphiniums and poppies and well everything else in front of your home, just beautiful!!
So I know after you are done and the front gardens established you will need a sign that says "EDEN"

    1. I told the neighbors that is will take 3 years to look the way I envision it (Ok, Eden-like is good LOL). Just to tease you, so far I've got some blue carpet junipers, maroon lavender, a rosemary from the backyard, mock orange, mugo pines... and I'm planning on doing a nice annual bed and seeding some nasturtiums and dwarf sunflowers for color.
